The Great Conjunction: Saturn And Jupiter (Watch Live)
Hello everyone,
Astrophiles and stargazers were waiting for this day for a long time including me. They have been given with a party from space as the
great conjunction between Saturn and Jupiter is going to happen on December 21,
2020. We will talk about the Great Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter and why is
it so important!!! If you are fond of witnessing space events than this Great
Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter is for you.
What is a Conjunction? What will be the time of the Great Conjunction?
The planets come into a straight line and seem to be merged
or joined or overlapped. This is known as the conjunction. The Great Conjunction between
Saturn and Jupiter will happen on December 21, 2020, at 11.50 p.m. (IST) in
India. Saturn and Jupiter will come in a straight line concerning
Earth and will be seem overlapped.
This had happened many times in the past but this time it is
more important than ever. Talking about the past, in the year 2020, we have seen
nearly 5-6 conjunctions. The first conjunction of the year happened on January
27, 2020 between Venus and Neptune. On March 9, 2020, conjunction between
Uranus and Venus had happened. Thereafter, Jupiter and Mars had conjunction
on April 9, 2020. There happened 2-3 more conjunctions after these conjunctions
had occurred.
There lies a distance of 73 Crore (735 million) kilometers
between Saturn and Jupiter. During the Great Conjunction, the distance will be the same but both the planets will be overlapping and will come into a straight line.
Let’s have some basic information about our Solar System.
There are 8 planets in our Solar System and each revolves around the Sun. The
planet nearest to the Sun, Mercury takes 88 days to complete a revolution. Venus takes 224 days, Earth- 365.26 days, Mars- 1.18 years, Jupiter- 11.86
years, Saturn- 29.46 years, Uranus- 84 years and Neptune takes 164 years to
complete a revolution of the Sun. The Great of Greatest conjunction happens in
Rare of Rarest moments. All the eight planets coming into a straight line,
forming Great Greatest Conjunction is a rare moment indeed. This had happened
in 1984 and will happen again on May 6, 2492. (Perhaps none of the readers
gotta be watching this).
Why the Great Conjunction is so important this time:
To understand this, first of all, we have to do some simple
calculations. The orbits of all the planets are 360° degrees as of complete circle.
The Jupiter covers up to 30° out of 360° with a speed of 13 km/s. Whereas
in the same time interval, Saturn covers 12° out of 360° with a speed of 9.8
km/s. Saturn and Jupiter can’t cope up with each other’s speed and cannot
remain in conjunction forever. So, the conjunction happens when they come into
a straight line.
Now, we are doing some mental calculations to calculate what is the
average time interval between consecutive conjunctions of Saturn and Jupiter.
The difference between the covered degrees in a year is 18° between Saturn and
Jupiter (30°-12°). This difference 18° multiplied with 20 years results into
360°, which indicates that the conjunction happens every 20 years. Then you
will have a question arising in your mind that--- Why the Great Conjunction
2020 is important and labeled as ‘GREAT’? Also, you might have heard that you
are going to see the Great Conjunction after 800 years. According to
calculation, it shows the time interval between two consecutive conjunctions to
be 20 years.
Whenever the conjunction between Saturn and Jupiter occurs,
there remains a minimum of 5° to a maximum of 15° of difference between Saturn and Jupiter.
Basically, it does not overlap perfectly and some gap remains there. This time
it is more important because there will be a gap of only 0.1° only (which can
be neglected) and can be seen perfectly overlapped.
This had happened a long ago in 1223, which might have missed by humans because at that time the Saturn and Jupiter were not even identified
as the planets of the Solar System. The same repetition occurred after 400 years
in 1623. Galileo Galilei might have enjoyed the scene because the telescope was
invented before that (in 1609). Although, both the planets Saturn and Jupiter were
oriented in a tilted manner during that conjunction.

Conclusion: The Great Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter with only 0.1° of difference and no tilt is going to happen again on December 21, 2020, at 11.50 p.m. (IST). It can be seen from India. If you own 7*50 binoculars, you can watch Jupiter along with its four moons and Saturn with its beautiful magnificent rings. If you do not have the binoculars, no need to panic because it can be seen with naked eyes in a clear sky. Just pray to have a clear sky on 21st December’s night and enjoy watching the great conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter because it won’t be appearing again before 2080. SO DON’T MISS IT.
