Beirut Explosion: Lebanon
Hello everyone,
This year 2020 has proven cursed to humans. Since January something unusual is happening every month all around. It's almost August and more than half a year has been passed but the catastrophes like CoVID pandemic, Brazilian forest fire, Australian bush fires, and Lebanese blast are happening every now and then. This Lebanese blast on Tuesday was one of the most dangerous accidents that happened in 2020. It is now included in the world's 12 most dangerous blasts.
As I am writing this blog, the statistics of wounded people are increasing. Until now, we only know that nearly 100 people were killed and more than 4000 were injured. The explosion looked too big when I saw it on video. It was really devastating which left 3,00,000 people homeless. Lebanese PM has said that those who are responsible for this explosion won't be forgiven.
How the explosion happened and what was the real reason behind it?
The answer to this question is not completely clear but officials announced that it was because of a warehouse storing the chemical. There is a warehouse at the seaport which contained 2750 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate. Ammonium Nitrate has many uses but is mainly used as fertilizer in farming. The other use which should be mention here is that it can be used for making explosives too. It's an explosive material that blasts if catches fire. The officials giving reasons that due to the heat of summer the ammonium nitrate stored in the warehouse exploded. I think this is a lame reason and there is something big behind this explosion.
How big the blast was?
The explosion was too huge that it was not only heard but felt in Cyprus. This is too big because Cyprus is approximately 100 miles away from Beirut where the blast had happened. The shock wave of this blast had been felt at a distance of 100 miles. This can give a rough estimate that how huge the blast was.
Steps that were taken to counteract the blast:
- The Lebanese government doing everything to take the situation under control. Rescuing people and sending them to the hospital had been carried out the whole night of Tuesday.
- An Instagram account has been created to help those people who are victims of the blast. The pictures of victims are posted on this account so their families can find them. This is a really good initiative and an effective way of using social media platforms. I am giving the username of the account so you can check and access what's going on. Click on the username.
- There is another Instagram account for those who lost their homes and became homeless due to this explosion. Those who have an extra house or studio or anything are providing these as shelters to the homeless. You can also check the Instagram account. Click on the username.
Total Devastation:
- The damage caused by the blast is too much and the silos were burned during the explosion. The silos were storing approximately 85% of the grains of the country. That means the majority of food grain has been burned and there is nothing or too little left which can be used as food.
- The smoke containing toxic nitrogen dioxide gas is raising still after 24 hours of the blast. The orange blast seen by witnesses reports that perhaps it was ammonium nitrate that caused the explosion.
- The streets of Beirut are littered with dead bodies and damaged vehicles. The whole area has been transformed into a war zone. We should pray for the well being of the victims.
- Many apartments and buildings are damaged and blown out.
International help to Lebanon:
As the explosion happened many countries came forward to help the government of Lebanon. It really shows the international togetherness and we're slowly walking towards international peace.
- France is sending mobile medical units to treat 500 victims. The vehicles are like a mobile hospital that can be used for victims who can't be transferred to the hospital. These mobile units will be used for the treatment of victims on the spot.
- Jordan helping the victims by dispatching a military hospital and Egypt opened a field hospital to receive victims.
- Czech has sent a team of 37 rescuers with sniffer dogs to find those who are stuck in the affected area.
- Denmark is providing humanitarian assistance and Greece is ready to help the Lebanese government.
Conclusion: As the blast happened, most of the countries helping Lebanon which shows the attitude of countries. The helping attitude is really needed for humans right now. Humanity will survive if everyone will help each other.
