Lights, Camera and Action
Hello everyone,
Today I am going to talk about Acting skill and Actor Paresh Rawal. I chose this topic because I just read his interview in a book. He is a natural actor and I am a fond of acting. I acted in my college play and when I think about that I feel amazed that I can do it.
Paresh Rawal started his career in 1973 in a gujarati drama called "TOKHAR." We all had seen his acting in movies but he says that, he puts theatre first than movies. Another hit drama he gave was "CHANACE."
I haven't seen this dramas till now but if someday I will get a chance I will definitely watch it. He says that he likes theatre more than movies because it gives them an opportunity to talk about their work. After the act, they all gather around for coffee and exchange the ideas. Movies don't give these opportunities because on movie set, you act and go home. No discussion. Now, when I talk about acting in my career, I acted in play when I was in class 6. I played a character of Lord Rama's friend in Ramayana drama in my school. At that time, I didn't knew much about acting and I might have done some mistakes. Then in class 9, I played a villain character of Dushashan in Mahabharata play. It was the festival of Janmashtmi and we have to perform drama that shows the glory of Lord Krishna. There is a funny experience with this play I will remember my whole life. It was really humorous. Actually, I was playing Dushashan and scene was of Draupadi's cheer-haran. Then Krishna comes and save Draupadi. I was informed that the boy who was playing Draupadi would be wearing two or three sarees and I have to just pull one saree. So it looks like that the boy playing Krishna saves Draupadi. It was all at backstage. Then I entered on stage to perform my act. We were playing chaupath as Kauravas against Pandavas. Then the moment came and I pulled Draupadi on stage. I didn't knew that there was a shortage of sarees and there was only one saree left for Draupadi. All other sarees were given to other actors. I actually didn't knew that and I started pulling the saree. As I was pulling the saree the boy playing Draupadi too started pulling the saree from other side. He was muttering to me that you do not have to pull it all and I said, "No, I have informed that you would be wearing three sarees." He was like, "Hey, let it go, I am not wearing another saree." In this whole incidence Krishna got confused and audience too. Audience didn't knew when Krishna came and leave. All were watching us and laughing hard. After the drama I talked to our teacher and then he explained me whole situation that how they were running out of costumes.
This was a mistake which turned into a laughter but I did an amazing act in drama from my college. Afterwards, wherever I go in my college, I was recognised as the character I played. I played the character of Manmohan Singh in our college drama. The whole scenario was we have to prepare for Youth Festival. So, we prepared a parody of Chandrayaan-2. My friend was playing K. Shivan (Director of ISRO) and I was playing another official included in launching of Chandrayaan-2. As this whole drama was rejected so we changed the topic and prepared another drama. We were having many characters of different political leaders like Narendra Modi (changed to Amrendra Modi), Lalu Yadav (as Aalu Yadav), Rahul Gandhi (as Aahul Gandhi) and Manmohan Singh (as Maunmohan Singh). My teacher asked me that which character I would like to play. As I was confident that I could play any of them I answered that whichever character will remain after everyone choose. This is how I got to play the character of Manmohan Singh. I thought of it being easy but I was wrong. I immediately watched the biopic of Manmohan Singh and watched some of the interviews of Anupam Khair. In the interviews Anupam Khair revealed how he was preparing himself to play this character. By watching him, I changed my speaking dialect and my walking style. Even I became too concious and I mixed myself with the character. Whenever I wasn't playing the character I talked like the character, even I quit my own style of walking and I walked as Manmohan Singh walked. This was the first time I was personally changing myself to portray a character. It was really hard. I acted in front of mirror and many times I made mistakes. The main problem was I was not getting the dialect how Anupam Khair got it. I was changing the voice of character into my voice. With these mistakes I rehearsed and get rid off them. When I showed my final product, everyone got amazed. Everyone was laughing and I felt like, I did it. Also, after the Youth Festival when everything was over, I went to the staff room and a teacher called me like, "Oi, Manmohan Singh." I really felt that, what I prepared finally everyone's going to remember.
So, this was my story of acting and how I performed. I really feel that I want to act. I will be going to act when I will get a chance.
Conclusion: Don't portray a character, Be the character.
